چکیده

217 O diagnosis and treatment planning have recently moved into the digital realm, to the extent that virtual treatment projections have become commonplace. Several proprietary software platforms, including Invisalign ClinCheck,* OrthoCAD iQ,** and Ormco Insignia,*** allow clinicians to modify virtual models that are suspended in space on their computer screens. But there is a significant shortcoming in the basic design of the most commonly used programs: improper orientation of the occlusal plane. That is the fundamental flaw in the current process of virtual smile design. For many years, when an orthodontist trimmed diagnostic study models, the bases of the models were trimmed parallel to the Frankfort horizontal plane, and the resulting occlusal plane was thus oriented to be a true representation of the patient’s actual occlusal plane angle relative to Frankfort horizontal (Fig. 1). According to Downs, that angle ranges from 2° to 17°, with a mean of about 9° (Fig. 2).2-7 At some point, however, the standard changed so that study models were trimmed with the occlusal plane parallel to the floor (or desktop). That was because the upper model would frequently fall off the lower model and break if they were trimmed in the original manner. The new

Changes of occlusal plane inclination after orthodontic treatment with and without extraction in Class II patients

Introduction: The inclination of the occlusal plane (OP) is related to type of dental occlusion. The aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the inclination of occlusal plane in Class II patients treated with the upper first premolars extraction or non-extraction modalities. Materials & Methods: Totally, forty 16-25-year-old patients (15 males and 25 females) with class II malocclusion, ...

Evaluating the Distance between Parotid Papilla and Occlusal Plane in Dentate Patients

Background and purpose: Determining the occlusal plane is one of the essential clinical steps in prosthetic treatment. Intraoral landmark of parotid papilla is used as an adjunct in determining the occlusal plan. The aim of this study was to investigate the exact distance between the parotid papilla and the occlusal plane as an additional criterion for determining the occlusal plane. Materials...

Occlusal plane flattening by miniscrew in skeletal open bite:a case report

Introduction: Different factors such as respiratory disorders , genetics, facial growth pattern , tongue malfunction and malposition are associated with anterior open bite. Skeletal open bite is often appeared by increased posterior dentoalveolar height of maxilla and backward rotation of mandible. Many treatment approaches have been developed for treatment of increased facial height problems. ...

Parallelism of the Occlusal Plane with the Ala-tragus Line in Various Posterior References in Dentate Patients

Background and purpose: Occlusal plane in edentulous patients is lost and needs to be reconstructed. The most common method for reconstructing occlusal plane is to make it parallel to the ala-tragus line. There are disagreements about the posterior reference of ala-tragus line. The aim of this study was to determine the best posterior reference of ala-tragus line (superior, middle and anterior ...

Surgical Manipulation of the Occlusal Plane in Class III Deformities: 5 Features to Help Planning

Class III malocclusion is one of the most common deformities that requires correction through orthodontic-surgical treatment. These patients present different facial patterns depending on the occlusal plane angulation. These patients may benefit from surgical manipulation of the occlusal plane, because only bite correction does not always lead to the improvement of the facial deformity. The pur...
